my SPM essay :)

The Elevator

The bell just rang signing that the first period was just about to start. Everyone was sleepy and had their heads on their desks. When Ms Norin walked in, everyone stood up while yawning and stretching at the same time. English lesson was always fun with Ms Norin and we had fun. My name is Nadira Anuar. I had just moved to Malacca a few weeks ago. I am currently studying in a local high school here. The school is ancient and has long history of its own. The very one special thing about the school is it has its own elevator! Isn’t it cool or what! However, nobody seems to use it. I wonder why?

One day, I was just walking along the hallway and admiring the surrounding when I got lost. “Great, just great. The new kid gets lost at her new school. Oh man, this is so not cool,” I sighed. As I was walking and searching my way back, I found the famous elevator. It was located at the very end of the school building. “No wonder nobody is using it, it is just too far away. But this thing is seriously ancient. So cool,” I looked at the elevator with the look of utter fascination. It is engraved with unique symbols and writings that I just could not read and understand. I looked at my watch. “Oh no! Oh no!. I am so late for the first period!” I quickly turned around and dashed away from the elevator. Suddenly, I heard the elevator opened. On instinct I turned to see who was in it when a hand stopped me. “Whatever you do, do not look back. Just keep on moving and I’ll explain later own,” the voice said. I followed the instructions obediently. When we reached the computer lab, I turned and to my astonishments discovered that the person was Eric, my classmate.

“What is going on? You’re my classmate, right? Why did you tell me not to turn around? What are you even doing here?”. “Wo, wo slow down now. One question at a time. Yes, I’m your classmate Eric. The teacher told me to look for you because Min said that she saw you here,” Eric said. “Okay, so you mean everyone’s waiting for me?” Eric nodded. “This is so embarrassing. Now everyone knows I was lost,” I shook my head with exasperation. Eric laughed. “Hey, chill out. There is no damage done here,” Eric tried to hold onto his laughter. “Gee thanks. I feel so much better now, not. So, why was it you didn’t let me look at the elevator just now?” “You didn’t know the story do you?” Eric questioned me. “What story?” “It’s ……. nothing really,” Eric started to walked away. ”Hey! you owe me an explanation, remember? You promised.” I stood in front of him. “Okay, fine I’ll tell. It is rumoured that the elevator can bring spirits that is not at peace back from the Afterlife.” “You’re kidding me right? That is just so absurd!” “It is true and I had a story to prove it,”

It happened ten years ago. There was this girl named Lily. She was quite popular as she was a cheerful and an easy-going person. She used to live in Negeri Sembilan but moved here because her father, who worked as police officer got transferred here. She knew about the rumour about how the elevator can bring back spirits. One gloomy Wednesday, she was walking with her head in the clouds and suddenly found herself standing in front of the elevator. To her astonishment, the elevator opened and out came Adam, her childhood friend. “Adam! What are you doing here?!” “I came for you,” Lily brought Adam o the school garden and they did a lot of catching up. Lily could not even stop smiling every time she looked at Adam. Adam has grown into a handsome young man. Lily remembered how Adam was always bullied by the neighbourhood kids. She will be his knight in shining armour and fought with all the bullies. It was really heart-breaking when she got the news that she and her family was moving. They said their goodbyes with tears going down their cheeks.

“You were such a crybaby, Lily” “Hey! You cried the most okay,” and they laughed together. Suddenly, Ema came and talked to Lily for awhile. Then, Ema left and looked at Lily with a very puzzled expression. The day ended and Adam told Lily that he had to return back but promised to come again tomorrow. Lily was excited for tomorrow.
The next day came and Lily bumped into Ema. “Hey, Ema,” “Oh, hi Lily”. Lily asked Ema why did she looked puzzled when she was looking at her. “Were you talking to someone yesterday?” “Yeah. It was my childhood friend Adam. Why?” “But Lily no one was there. You were alone,” “What are talking about. Of course there’s someone there and it’s A….. ,” Lily’s mind suddenly begun to reel in. Her mind clicked and she remembered all about the rumours of the elevator. Lily started running. “Hey! Lily where are you going?” Ema shouted but Lily could not even hear a word. She ran and ran. When she arrived at the elevator, she was panting and her heart was beating so fast that she thought it was going to leap out of her chest. Then, the elevator opened and out came Adam with a huge grin. Adam was just about to say something but Lily stopped him. “I know the truth Adam,” Lily trembled  as she was trying hard not to cty. “Oh, you know already.” Adam said sadly. “ How did you die, Adam?” Adam looked down and answered “ I died in an accident. I was hit by a car on the way to school. I was thinking of you during the last few minutes of my life. I was so terribly sad that I was not going to be able to look for you. I’ve always love you Lily Anne Stratford,” Adam’s shoulders began to slumped as he was walking back towards the elevator. Tears began rolling down Lily’s cheeks. “Wait! Adam wait! I’ve always love you too. Please don’t go I’m begging you ,”.

Adam turned around and a huge smile lit up his face. “ Really Lily?” Lily nodded. “ I’m really glad to hear that. I still have to go, Lily my time has come. But before I go can you help me?” “Of course! Anything Adam just say it,”. “I need you to fetched me the most valuable thing to me. Can you do that?” Lily agreed.
Adam brought Lily to a huge lake. “My most valuable item is on that island in the middle of the lake,” Without hesitation, Lily got into the icy-cold water and started to wade herself towards the island. Suddenly, the rain came down. The rain was pouring down like crazy. The water-level began to rise. “Oh no! I can’t swim! Help me, Adam!” Adam smiled wickedly. “Why should I save you, Lily? You’re that most valuable thing to me. I want us to be together in the Afterlife!”

Lily’s body was discovered floating lifeless in the lake the very next day.

“From then on, everybody started to stay away from the elevator,” Eric concluded his story. Then, we got back to class. I will never forget Eric’s story. I am still not sure if the story’s true or not but I am staying away from the elevator, just in case.
